Serious Legal Representation for Serious Injuries in a Dallas Truck Crash

With 44 port terminals, 19 airports, 15 pipeline terminals, and 19 truck facilities connected to rail lines, Texas has more connections for large trucks to pick up and transport cargo than any other state, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). Texas’s proximity to the US’s southern border also makes the state a key travel area for imported and exported goods.

Truck traffic plays a key role in a healthy economy – but it can also increase the risk of a serious crash. If you’re injured in a truck collision in Dallas, speak to an experienced Dallas truck accident attorney today. The team at Chandler Ross can help.

Texas Large Truck Accident Statistics

Large trucks were involved in 86.5 percent of all freight transportation deaths and 13.3 percent of all highway deaths in 2022, according to the BTS. The BTS notes that the “vast majority” of those who die in truck crashes are occupants of other passenger vehicles – not drivers or passengers in large trucks.

Highway deaths from large trucks dropped for nearly 30 years, between 1990 and 2019, before swinging upward again in 2020. Roadway deaths jumped 20.1 percent, according to the BTS.

Tractor-trailers were involved in 430 fatal crashes in Texas in 2024. Other transport trucks, including box trucks, were involved in 158 fatal collisions.

Common Sites for Truck Crashes in Dallas

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) records much higher traffic counts for Dallas than for many surrounding areas. In 2025, average daily traffic counts in Dallas topped 100,000 vehicles in several key areas, including the intersection of 35E and 67 and US-45 near Santa Fe Avenue. Traffic counts of over 200,000 vehicles per day were recorded on I-30 just east of the intersection with I-75.

Unsurprisingly, these sites are also common locations for truck crashes. Truck collisions can happen on non-freeways as well.

Dallas Truck Accident Statistics

In 2022, Dallas recorded 33,980 vehicle collisions, according to TxDOT. These crashes included:

  • 212 fatal crashes causing 228 total deaths,
  • 1,004 crashes causing 1,182 total serious injuries,
  • 3,971 collisions causing 5,448 total minor injuries.

In over 12,000 crashes, TxDOT did not have adequate information to know if anyone was injured.

In Dallas County in 2024, 29 people died in 27 collisions involving a commercial truck or bus. In 108 collisions, 124 separate serious injuries were recorded. “Minor” or “possible” injuries occurred in over 1,300 collisions.

Common Features of Large Truck Crashes

In 2023, 5,375 large trucks were involved in fatal crashes throughout the US, according to the National Safety Council (NSC). While this number represents a decrease from 2022, it is also a 43 percent increase since 2013. Texas has ranked first in the US in most large truck crashes every year since 2017.

Common features of large truck crashes include:

  • Higher death rates among non-occupants. In 2023, 70.1 percent of deaths in large truck crashes happened to people in other vehicles. Over 12 percent of deaths were inflicted on pedestrians or bicyclists. These groups are also more likely to be injured.
  • Urban areas aren’t the most common site for fatal collisions. In 2023, 55.67 percent of all fatal large truck crashes happened in rural areas.
  • Interstates are involved in about one in four deadly crashes. In 75 percent of fatal truck crashes, the collision occurred on a non-interstate road.

No matter what happened in a crash, an injured person or surviving family members can seek compensation. Talk to an attorney to learn more.

What to Do After a Large Truck Accident

After a large truck crash, it’s easy to feel helpless. Your world has been turned upside-down. You face unexpected and potentially serious injuries, the loss of a loved one, or both.

Yet you can take steps to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your legal rights. Doing what you can to participate in your case can help you regain a sense of control and confidence in your life.

Medical Care

Always put safety and health first after a crash. Call 911 at the scene if needed. If you don’t receive emergency care at the scene, see a doctor as soon as possible.

When you get prompt medical care, you maximize your ability to heal. You also create a clear record of the damage the crash did to your body and health – a record that can help you recover full compensation later.

Documenting Your Case

If possible, take photos or video at the scene. Get the contact information of the truck driver, their trucking company, and any witnesses. If you cannot get this information at the scene, see if you can get a copy of a police report.

Save all your paperwork related to the crash. Common paperwork includes notes from your doctor, medical bills, paperwork from your job if you needed time off work, and repair bills for a damaged vehicle. If you only have the paperwork because the crash happened, keep it. This information can help you document your case – and your need for compensation.

Seeking Legal Help

Talk to an experienced attorney as soon as possible after the crash. A lawyer will help you protect your legal rights, investigate your case, and fight for the compensation you deserve.

Should I Hire a Dallas Truck Accident Lawyer?

Texas courts allow a person injured in a truck accident to file a lawsuit without an attorney. In practice, however, this is a difficult path to take. An attorney can support you in several important ways, carrying your case from start to finish.

Time Limits

Texas’s statute of limitations restricts the time available to file a lawsuit after a truck injury. In Texas, you have only two years to file a personal injury claim. If your case isn’t filed in court within this time, you lose the opportunity to present it to a judge.

In many cases, the window to file expires two years after the date of the crash. In some cases, however, the deadline can fall on a different day.

Your lawyer will first calculate the exact deadline in your case, depending on the factors involved. Then, your attorney will ensure your case is filed by that deadline. With a lawyer on your side, you won’t miss the opportunity to seek the full, fair compensation you deserve.

Proving Fault

Proving fault in a large truck crash can be challenging. Often, an injured person’s first thought is to blame the truck driver. Yet the driver may not be at fault – or the driver may be only one of several parties that are responsible for the crash.

Other parties that could be involved include:

  • Other drivers on the road, whose careless or reckless actions may have triggered a chain of events that led to harm.
  • The trucking company, whose negligent hiring, training, or supervision may have left the driver unable to respond safely in an emergency.
  • The person or company responsible for the truck’s maintenance, if neglected repairs or maintenance led to the crash.
  • Manufacturers of any truck part, load tie-down, or other item whose hidden defect triggered the collision.
  • Those responsible for loading freight, if they loaded it incorrectly in a way that caused the crash or related injuries.

Your attorney will thoroughly investigate your case, determine who is responsible, and include them in your case so all negligent parties are held accountable.

Compensation

An injury case or a wrongful death claim seek compensation for serious or fatal injuries. Common losses compensated in a personal injury case include:

  • Medical bills, including bills you’ve already paid, current bills, and the costs of medical care you will likely need in the future.
  • Lost wages, including wages you missed from being unable to work and wages you may lose if your injuries prevent you from working again.
  • Repair or replacement costs for damaged property, such as a totaled vehicle.
  • Conscious pain and suffering connected to your injuries.
  • Loss of enjoyment of life, such as hobbies you can no longer do.
  • Mental and emotional anguish, including mental trauma, the difficulty of dealing with disfigurement, and similar losses.

Wrongful death claims can also seek compensation for funeral and burial expenses and for the losses surviving family members face due to the untimely death.

After a truck crash causes serious injuries or claims a life, your full-time job is to heal and care for yourself and your loved ones. Let your attorney take on the work of fighting for the compensation you deserve.
